    This qualification is for people who lead walks of less than one-day duration, on clearly formed and marked tracks with bridged river crossings. Two-day assessment.

    Bush Leader Overnight Endorsement

    The holder of this qualification can manage and instruct groups on overnight experiences, below the bushline. Participants may be sleeping in tents, flies, backcountry huts or rock shelters. A midday to midday overnight standalone assessment or integrate into the Bush Leader Assessment.

    The holder of this qualification can organise, instruct and lead multi-day tramping trips in easy and moderate bush terrain. Trips can extend above the bushline in easy and moderate terrain and in summer conditions (without snow and no snow forecast). Patches of old snow may exist and can be crossed where no sliding potential exists. Three-day assessment.

    The holder of this qualification can organise, instruct and lead multi-day tramping trips in moderate and hard bush terrain. Trips can extend above the bushline in summer conditions (without snow and no snow forecast). Patches of old snow may exist and can be crossed where no sliding potential exists. Trips above and below the bushline can be in remote, untracked terrain. The assistance of a rope may be required. It is also for people instructing other bush and outdoor instructors and leaders. Three-day assessment.

    Course Outlines (Assessments)

    On a NZOIA assessment there are a wide range of skills and knowledge that you will be tested on. Your Assessor will endeavour to ensure all areas in the syllabus are assessed. Below are outlines of what will likely be covered (depending on environmental conditions and other considerations at the time of the assessment) and how it relates to the syllabus.

    Presentations

    1. Prepare an interactive, engaging presentation to be delivered to the other candidates on your allocated topic during the assessment. It should be between 5 – 10 minutes in duration (strictly no longer than 10 mins):

    Assigned topic examples:

      • Cultural history of the area
      • Geology of the area
      • Local flora and fauna
      • Mountain / Bush / outdoor industry organisations in NZ
      • Navigation apps
      • Kaitiakitanga
      • Emergency communications, an overview- pros and cons
      • Weather in the NZ Mountains
    1. Prepare to instruct a group of clients on a topic relevant to the day. For example, map reading skills, route finding, shelter building, fire lighting, environmental care. Instruction time will be approximately 20 minutes. You will be allocated an area of instruction in consultation with the Assessor during the assessment.

    Assignment - Scenario

    You will be given a scenario and asked to plan a three-day bush trip based on the information given. This will include a trip plan with aims and objectives, nutrition, how you would source weather and access information, hazard identification, and contingencies.

    • Section 1: Demonstrate navigation and location awareness skills
    • Section 3: Demonstrate campcraft skills
    • Section 4: Demonstrate safe practices for river and waterway travel
