    What is required to complete the application process:
     

    Senior Sea Kayak Instructor Training

    This is a nine day course run by Outdoor Education New Zealand specifically designed for people who are wanting to lead people in the ocean environment. Suitable for those working towards NZOIA Sea Kayak 2, or wanting to become trip leaders for clubs/social clubs where technical skills are being delivered.

     

    Prerequisites

    Before attending this course, you must be confident paddling in a variety of conditions, with efficient paddle strokes and self-rescue skills in moving water.

    An example of varied conditions, wind up to 20 knots, surf up to 1.0 meters, swell of up to 1.5 meters and tidal current of up to 4 knots.

     

    Course Content

    Weather Forecast

    • Applying weather forecasting to decision making.
    • Understand global weather systems and influences.
    • Understanding and ability to use field observations for decision making
    • Understanding localized effects of weather from topography

    Navigation and Location Awareness

    • Travel on a compass bearing allowing for wind & sea conditions in limited visibility
    • Can use a compass for resections and following bearings
    • Estimating time and distance and on spot contingency planning for unexpected weather changes

    Role Model  and demonstrate the following skills:

    • A range of efficient and effective paddle techniques
    • Rescues – client & personal
    • Rolling a sea kayak
    • Difficult land/launch sites ie. steep and rocky shores
    • Campcraft, selecting campsites, toileting management
    • Responsibilities to landowners including access protocols

    Leadership/Instructional skills:

    • Deliver effective teaching workshops on skills relevant to sea kayaking suitable to the conditions and ability of the group, including an opportunity to extend the learner within the session.
    • Plan and prepare 2 x multi-day educational and safe sea kayak experiences for model clients
    • Lead and manage a group for 2 x 2 consecutive days in sea kayaking
    • Apply effective safety management & hazard analysis applicable to group, equipment, location and environmental conditions
